Butler holds on, as Zotta holds em back!

Congratulations to our newest hero, the 2011 ECIRS Champion Jason Butler. Jason was able to keep the lead in true champion form by winning the 1st race, and stretching out his lead over rivals including two past ECIRS champions Fred Gramby and Keith Burnham. Of course it wasn't that easy for our new champ, who had apparently used up all his tricks, luck, what have you in the first race, and went out in round 1 of the finale against new comer Jim McCabe. But Jason had an angel on his shoulders today, one by the name of Jerry. So while Jason watched helplessly from the sidelines after round 1, old time ECIRS'r Jerry Zotta took out everyone that was below him starting with Celeste in round 2, and then quickly dispatched the #3 contender, Keith Burnham, with no less than a perfect light. With Keith now out, and just in time too as had Keith won that round it would have been his 2nd championship, only one other racer had a chance at glory. Next in the cross hairs of Mr Z was the OG himself, Fred Gramby. Dread Fred had been mowing down the competition all year, and it wasn't going to be easy for Jerry, and Jason new it. But never count out the Z Man, who once again said I own this town, and chopped the tree down leaving Fred with nothing to do but stare at tail lights the whole way down the track. The boards lit up, and so did Jason. Way to go Jerry for a return to the winners circle in the one everyone wants to take, and congrats to Jason on taking the crown after holding off some of the toughest competition and one of the closest finishes of ECIRS history!

to retake the #1 spot in points after it was held for a very brief time by fellow racer Fred Gramby. Jason got off to a good start with the Bye in round 1 that he earned with a .013 light in qualifying. Jason then got a break when finalist Mike Harris broke mid track, giving Jason an easy victory in the finals. In all it was a great day for racing, a picnic, and the occasional air show fly over by a B-17 Flying Fortress and several P-51 Mustangs carrying out escort duty.

Drag Day plaque with a gift from Celeste after her -.002 red light in the finals, which was held at Empire Dragway due to the race being stopped at Capital two weeks earlier. It was a great show for those watching from the fence, as Celeste turned on her Red Light and had Fred grinning from ear to ear as he chased her down, but couldn't quite catch her at the stripe as they both nailed their dials. Congrats to Fred on his first win of the 2011 season.

at Island Dragway, taking out Barry Gaudette in a double break out final round. Jason cut a slightly better light, and ran it out as Barry ran past him at the end, but Barry was just too quick and Jason was almost dead on his dial with a 14.998 on 15.00 dial. Jason gets his first ever ECIRS win for a coveted race plaque and is now tied for 1st place in points. Barry also storms back into the top 10 with his sharp reactions and skilled driving at the stripe, save one round.

taking the Gramby Motorsports plaque home to hang on the wall next to the others. Next year we'll see about ordering the plaque with Keith's name on it and shipping it directly to his house. Perhaps he could send us a photo of all 3 hanging on the wall to place in the web album?

Keith dedicates this victory to the memory of Ron Heinkel, who recently lost his life in a fatal motorcycle accident. Keith said that Ron was a good friend to drag racing, and enjoyed the company of fellow racers. Ron especially liked Keith, and made daily visits to see Keith in the hospital to cheer him up and see if there was anything he needed while recovering from heart surgery.

It's Deja Vu at Island Dragway

as the seesaw battle at the top of the points list continues between Nabil Guffey and Keith Burnham. In a familiar scene, these two focused and determined contenders once again faced off in the final round at the ECIRS Last Chance Race at Island Dragway, sponsored by Island Racing Service. Unfortunately for Keith (or maybe not ;^)), the outcome was the same as when they had previously met at this ECIRS favorite track, with Nab once again taking the stripe, the win, and the points lead. However, Keith is content to keep his rival in his sights at just a few points behind, and possibly change his luck this time by not being the points leader heading into the double points finale as he has been the last 2 years in a row. Congrats to Nab for the hard fought win, and to Keith for a strong showing that sets the stage for a double points finale that will either be a nail bitter or a slam dunk.
